Leveraging Diversity On Your Team

How can you best leverage the diversity on your team? First, you must focus on and recognize the inner strengths, unique gifts, and talents each individual brings to the team. Every human being is physically, emotionally, and mentally unique. As Farshad Asl said, “There is an amazing beauty and strength in diversity. Everyone has something special to offer . . . The key is the culture of unity and team work.”

One way to tap into the special something everyone has to offer is by understanding the different thinking style each member brings to the team through the Gregorc Style Delineator tool. This instrument helps identify how each individual takes in and organizes information, which in turn, affects the strengths they bring to the team. For example, individuals with a concrete sequential (CS) thinking pattern are the convergent thinkers who narrow down ideas with actionable solutions; the abstract sequential (AS), also a convergent thinker, intellectualizes an idea and conducts the research; the abstract random (AR) is the divergent thinker who generates many creative ideas and takes care of the social needs of the team; and lastly the concrete random (CR) thinker, also a divergent thinker, is the change agent ready to act and move the team forward into new territory.

Understanding the differences in thought encourages collaboration, flexibility, and allows each individual to participate and contribute to the team’s overall mission. By fully leveraging the diversity of your team members, you will be able to achieve results previously thought to be unattainable.
